It does take a little getting used to, there is a redefinition of the word “busy” needed to describe New York. It soon grows on you, the noise and stream of people, the queues everywhere you go. It’s so very alive and energetic, the perfect place to get business done.

The smart money for transport is the subway, New York roads are pretty congested. Cabs work at some times of the day, at others you’ll spend time (and money) just stuck in long queues.

The interests and pastimes of the average New Yorker are hugely varied. Watching and practising sports is popular, as is reading, photography, yoga and meditation. If you have an interest, you’ll find plenty of people who share it in New York.

Eating

It’s famous for its pizza and hot dogs (you’re never more than a block away from a hot dog), but there is so much more to the food scene here. Currently, French food is a big hit, Frenchette and La Mercerie cafe at the Guild are good examples of this trend. 5 of the 120 three-star Michelin star restaurants in the world are in New York, but whatever your budget or taste, you’ll find something that hits the spot.

Working

You won’t be surprised to know that work is a top priority for the average New Yorker. People work longer hours here than in other US cities. Dress depends on the individual workplace. Some still stick to smart business-wear, others are taking a cue from Silicon Valley and encouraging casual dress.

Even if you’re not big into books, a visit to the Morgan Library is worth it. It’s like something you’d find at Hogwarts. The library started life as private, owned by financiers Pierpont Morgan and J.P Morgan, and it shows, the decor really is remarkable.

Sweet tooth? The museum of ice cream is one of New York’s more boutique visitor experiences and worth a visit, even if you’re not a die-hard ice cream lover. There’s a ‘lickable’ interactive exhibit and giant sundaes you can sample. Given New York’s winters, it’s only open in the summer months.
