Food is a major part of Japanese life, which is reflected in the total of 234 Michelin stars, the highest of any city in the world. It’s true that proper manners are prized in Japan, along with attention to detail, but the Japanese are friendly, welcoming and enjoy fun and laughter.

Tokyo has a rightly deserved reputation as a fascinating city. It’s people, location, culture and food all combine to make visiting a very special experience

While it’s normal to wonder about a language barrier when travelling much of the tourist-based signage in Japan is also in English, along with major travel routes. It’s also pretty normal for locals to speak a little English.

Travel on the subway or bus is quick, efficient, and easy to access. You might see people on phone or tablets, but also small bunko books, small enough to fit into the palm of your hand.

Alongside the traditional pastimes of Origami, Karaoke and archery it’s quite normal to see football pitches or tennis and squash courts. There are also plenty of gyms, so keeping fit won’t be a problem.

Eating

The sheer number of styles of food, and the places to eat it, are a big part of the fun in Tokyo. We’ll make sure you get to sample a wide selection during your internship, but you’ll have great fun exploring restaurants, markets and bars for yourself.

Working

From October to April most business people where dark navy, charcoal grey or black suits. They pair this with a white shirt and subdued tie. Don’t pair a black suit with a black tie, as this is typically funeral attire. From May to September light grey suits are typical. Summers are hot, and short sleeves are normal. It’s OK to drop the tie and unbutton your collar unless you’re in a sales position. It’s worth keeping a tie on hand for meetings.

Shimokitazawa

A former farming village, Shimokitazawa (or Shimokita as known to locals) is only a 4 min train ride from Shibuya. The streets are narrow and intimate, and the area loved by artists, musicians, and the more bohemian.

Gotokuji

If you wondered where the Maneki Neko (beckoning cat figurine) comes from, then visit Gotokuji Temple. It’s said that a local feudal lord from the Edo period was ushered into the temple during a thunderstorm, securing his safety. You’re bound to get some good luck from your visit!
