Toronto is a really big city, but with only 4,334 people per square kilometre, it feels pretty breezy for a city this size. A lot of cities award themselves the “multicultural” label, but Toronto really means it, this is a city that welcomes all-comers with open arms.

Life in Toronto as a Student and Young Professional 

Living

It’s safe, friendly, there is loads of art and culture, and it’s a foodie heaven (6000 restaurants and counting). If you’re looking for that perfect mix of urban cool and cosmopolitan clout, you might have just found it.

English is the most common language. 87% of people in the 2016 census said they spoke English as a first language. About 20% of the population have another first language. You’ll hear Cantonese, Mandarin, and Punjabi too.

Traffic can get pretty snarled up. Many choose the public transit system to get about. You’ll find people who say it could be better. But, It covers 1200km of road, track and tunnel and so gets you where you need to be.

Toronto gets the four full seasons, and the locals like to make the most of each. Get outside in the spring and summer, it’s mild and pleasant. Take it easy in the summer, it’s hot and humid. Learn to love ice sports in the winter; it’s cold and snowy. This means a great year-round calendar of different past times so you don’t get bored.

Eating

The food scene is great in Toronto. You’ll find exceptional examples of nearly any type of food you could imagine. There are plenty of food tours or you could just dive right in and start picking out your favorite spots.

Working

As with other North American locations, the business culture features a clear chain of command. Workers are generally required to be flexible with working hours varying from week to week based on workload. It’s standard to work 40 hours per week on average. Workplaces are generally pretty focused without too much loud behavior. Likewise meetings are conducted to reach a way forward and so are agenda focused. Professional business attire in the normal dress, with suits worn by both sexes.

While there are lots of beautiful parks and green spaces in Toronto, this calm gem is pretty hidden. The Bamboo Garden in the University of Toronto’s Terrence Donnelly department. The students know all about it, but not many others do. It’s modelled on the gardens of Japan and has a climate-controlled space curtained in by colourful glass.

Kensington Market

Kensington Market is well known, but none the less awesome for that. There are lots of local non-chain shops selling unique offerings you won’t find elsewhere. It’s also a vegan heaven with lots of animal-friendly outlets and restaurants for guilt-free shopping.
