With start dates every month, and lasting anywhere between one and six months in length, choose the program that works for you.
In Amsterdam, you’ll have the chance to gain fantastic experience in the Charities and NGOs sector. The Dutch non-profit sector is the largest in the world, employing 14% of the country’s workers; as a result, there’s a wide range of opportunity awaiting you. The Dutch will likely be a little more informal than you’re used to, but they are extremely hard workers. They’re also a collaborative people, so your ideas and opinions will always be heard.
English is spoken widely in Amsterdam, and the city is home to a hodge-podge of nationalities. You’ll discover new peoples and cultures every day as you work here, and your non-native viewpoint will be unique.
We build our workshop to help you develop your core skills and competencies.
You’ll undertake a range of exercises with the guidance of professional coaches and speakers. A typical session will focus on leadership, team skills, and building confidence in a professional setting.
You’ll leave this session feeling reinvigorated for the weeks ahead.
While in Amsterdam, you’ll have the chance to undertake a 1-to-1 career session with a qualified coach. Look back on your successes and failures to date, as well as your strengths and weaknesses.
You’ll be busy experiencing the busy life of a Charity & NGO intern, with all the meetings, trips, and social events that entails. So you can pencil this in at the right time for you.
Take an early appointment to prepare yourself for the challenging weeks ahead. Or you can split your focus with a mid-term session; consider your progress so far before reflecting on any improvements you’d like to make going forward.
Lastly, a session in the final days of your internship is a great way to round things off. Consider what you’ve achieved, then plan out your next steps in this sector.

Get to grips with the heritage of the Netherlands before sampling delicious food and drink both domestic and international. Indulge in the city’s fantastic cycling culture to get some fresh air and exercise, or whizz around the city in a water taxi!
Alongside you as you explore Amsterdam will be your Beyond Community. They’ll have all the support and advice you could ever need – so get out there and have some fun!

Experience life at a slower pace as you take this relaxing canal cruise through Amsterdam. The city is nicknamed the ‘Venice of the North’ with good reason; discover iconic sights and a gorgeous array of multi-colored buildings as you sail along. As you go, try a delicious range of food and drink!
Dive into a world of unique history and culture as you take this market tour of Amsterdam. Hop from market to market, discovering it all; listen to local stories as you soak up the atmosphere, then try some authentic Dutch food and drink. Why not deep-fried kroket or poffertjes (fluffy pancakes)? After that, go international! Sample authentic Spanish tapas and Japanese yakitori skewers.
Head to Zaanse Schans for an authentic 18th-century experience. Discover windmills, traditional houses, museums, and bakeries; try some delicious freshly-baked cookies, then head to a dairy factory to sample some authentic Dutch cheese. And before you go, make sure to pick up a souvenir or two!
You’ll be eager to know what life as a Charities & NGOs intern is like, so we’ve put together a snapshot based on a typical 6-week internship.
After so much preparation and excitement, you’ve finally made it. Welcome to Amsterdam. It’ll soon be time to discover everything that awaits you in this fantastic city; but first thing’s first, meet us at the airport and we’ll whisk you straight to your new home for the next few weeks.
Your first day is yours to spend as you wish. Some interns like to sleep off the jet lag or otherwise kick back in their accommodation; others like to head straight back out the door and start exploring. The choice is yours. On day two, you’ll join us for your comprehensive orientation. We’ll take you through everything you need to know about your internship, including Amsterdam itself. That evening, head out to meet your brand-new community. Many interns make friends for life on our programs, and this is where it all starts.
You’ll soon be learning the ropes as you begin work. Your colleagues will be on hand to answer any question you might have; remember, this is a learning experience, so ask away. You’ll also have the constant support of your manager throughout your time here.
As you dive into your workload, you’ll find yourself faced with plenty of new challenges. So it’s a good idea to take an early workshop. Sharpen your skills with professional coaches, then leave ready to take on everything your internship can throw at you!
Next up, it’s your first trip. Take a canal cruise as you totally immerse yourself in Amsterdam. There’s no better way of experiencing this varied and dynamic city.
As the weeks go on, you’ve found yourself growing increasingly confident in your abilities. Whether you’re contributing ideas for your charity’s latest public outreach campaign; or liaising with partner firms and organizations on behalf of your company. So it’s a good time to head out to one of Amsterdam’s trendy coffee shops and discuss your progress with your manager.
You’ve found yourself busy over the past few weeks, and you’re looking to unwind. So head along to a community dinner and meet up with your friends. Swap stories about what you’ve got up to since you last checked in, all over some delicious food; then take a water taxi home.
With English spoken widely in Amsterdam, you’ll have likely picked up a few contacts already. To help you build your growing network, we’ll send you an invite to a top industry session. Meet and greet with top charity leaders; make a good impression and there might be job or interview offers around the corner.
Your second trip will take you on a deep dive of Amsterdam. Discover market after market as you immerse yourself in culture, history, and food!
Your internship is nearing its end, and you’ve been looking back on what you’ve gained. From world-class work experience to industry contacts and life-long friends, it’s been an amazing time. Before you leave, make sure you take some time out to consider your achievements in your 1-to-1 session; all with the guidance of a professional coach.
Your final trip is an excursion to Zaanse Schans. This historic village is a great way to cap off your time in the Netherlands; experience authentic culture and architecture as you sample a range of delicious food!
Your last scheduled event is your farewell dinner. Put on your best clothes and meet up with your friends for one last time. Organize your first group meet-up, then say goodbye. And before you’re due to fly out of Amsterdam, take some time to make the most of the city. Discover Kleine Trippenhuis, one of Amsterdam’s narrowest houses; or experience the secret tunnels under Cafe Papeneiland!

Our housing partners in Amsterdam are carefully chosen to meet our stringent safety, quality and cleanliness standards. We offer mainly student accommodation or shared apartments. You’ll be living with fellow Beyond Interns, students and other young professionals. It’s a great way to build your own community, especially if you’re traveling from abroad.
You’ll have your own private bedroom with shared communal spaces (kitchen, bathroom, living spaces etc). All rooms come with bedding, Wi-Fi, and often have a desk. Locations will vary but you’ll always be placed somewhere with access to public transport. Depending on where your firm is, we try to ensure your commute time is no more than 30-60 minutes.
We’ll confirm your exact accommodation and location around 3-4 weeks before your Charities & NGOs internship begins. This is due to the demand for short term accommodation and ever-changing availability.
