With professional guidance and insight, you’ll use this session to boost your core skills and employability. A typical session will take you through exercises in effective leadership, communication, and building professional confidence.
You’ll leave this workshop feeling ready for everything that awaits you on your internship!
Take some time out of your internship to consider your career and achievements to date. Along with a qualified coach, use this 1-to-1 session to reflect critically on your strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations.
Depending on your preferences, you can schedule your meeting for a time that suits you. Some choose an early appointment to prepare themselves for the coming weeks; set out your expectations, as well as any goals to meet. Others prefer a more balanced session a couple of weeks in; here, consider your progress so far, then reflect on any improvements you can make for your remaining time.
Lastly, a session capping off your time in New York will allow you to think about what you’ve gained over the course of your internship. You’ll also be able to kickstart your career by setting out a roadmap to your next job.
At any time in your program, you’ll also have access to tailored career advice and interview support. We’ll offer CV and resume support, as well as tips on improving your LinkedIn profile.

We’ll get you up to speed with everything that awaits you in New York; from the work you’ll be doing to the city itself. We’ll also make sure to send out plenty of invites to our popular community dinners, so head along!
Use your time in New York wisely; it’s your opportunity to develop a network of charity contacts. We’ll help by sending out an invite to a top industry session. Get to know top leaders in your sector; impress the right person and you might just be speaking to your next boss.
Explore one of the most famous boroughs in the world as you take a walking tour of Brooklyn. Kick things off by taking in the view from Brooklyn Bridge; then get ready to discover plenty of delicious food and contemporary art. And make sure you have some fun at the attractions at Coney Island before you go!
The Lower East Side is famous for its immigrant and working-class roots; and you’re about to immerse yourself in it. Check out the neighbourhood’s famous art scene, including street art, as you learn a bit of local history; try the Miguel Abreu Gallery and the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space for an inspiring history of activism. Then take in some slam poetry.
From speakeasies to jazz clubs, New York has a rich history of jazz music. Plenty of music legends have walked the stage here; this is your chance to discover some up-and-comers as you indulge in some world-class jazz. Enjoy the cocktails and music as you relax long into the night. It’s a cultural experience like no other!

You’ll want to know just what it’s like to embark upon a Charities and NGOs internship. Here’s a snapshot of a typical 6-week internship.
After months of careful planning and excitement, you’ve finally made it: welcome to the Big Apple. There’s so much awaiting you here, and you’ll see so much in the next six weeks. For starters, meet us on arrival and we’ll take you to your new home for your upcoming internship.
Spend your first day doing what works for you. Some like to kick back in their room and relax; others will head straight out the door and start exploring the city. On day two, you’ll join us for your orientation. We’ll soon get you up to speed with everything awaiting you on your program, including your exciting trips and tours. That evening, meet up with your new community. There’s no better way of being welcomed to New York; grab a slice of pizza or a pastrami sandwich and get to know your new friends.
Dive into your work and start learning the ropes. You’ll find that your colleagues will be there whenever you need advice, support, or information; an internship is a learning experience and they’re here to help you succeed.
But you’ll soon find yourself faced with plenty of new challenges. It’s a good idea to take an early skills workshop; boost your core competencies with the aid of professional coaches. Leave ready to take on the world!
It’s already time for your first day trip. Journey into the heart of Brooklyn as you get to know this world-famous borough. Take in the sights and try some delicious food while you’re here!
By week three, you’ve found yourself getting into the groove of your busy charity internship. You’ve been helping to coordinate local campaigns, working with volunteers and fundraisers to pull events off to perfection; and you’ve been growing your charity’s social media presence. So it’s a good time to take some time out with your manager and chat about your progress.
It’s been a busy few weeks, and you’re searching for a way to unwind. Fortunately, an invite to a community dinner has just turned up; so head along and relax, all over some delicious food. See how your friends’ own internships are getting on as you chat into the night.
You’ll likely have made a few contacts of your own while in New York; it’s time to attend an exclusive industry networking event to make a few more. Impress the right person and good things may be around the corner!
Now it’s time for your second tour. Experience the historic Lower East Side neighbourhood as you experience some world-class culture drawn from countless countries and nationalities. Visit an art gallery or two before you leave.
As your internship draws to a close, you’ve decided to cap off your program with a career session. Think about what you’ve achieved and what you could have done better; then turn your mind to the future. What opportunities are out there?
Your final trip is a complete immersion into the jazz scene of New York. Famous the world over, take in some live music and enjoy some delicious drinks as you gain a unique cultural education.
It’s time for your farewell dinner. This is your chance to have one last night on the town, so meet up with your friends and have fun; then say goodbye. In your final few days, you’ll want to make as much out of New York as you can. Head to the Ghostbusters Firehouse to spot a classic filming spot; or visit the Graffiti Tunnel at 191st Subway Station!

Our housing partners in New York are carefully chosen to meet our stringent safety, quality and cleanliness standards. We offer mainly student accommodation or shared apartments. You’ll be living with fellow Beyond Interns, students and other young professionals. It’s a great way to build your own community, especially if you’re traveling from abroad.
You’ll have your own private bedroom with shared communal spaces (kitchen, bathroom, living spaces etc). All rooms come with bedding, Wi-Fi, and often have a desk. Locations will vary but you’ll always be placed somewhere with access to public transport. Depending on where your firm is, we try to ensure your commute time is no more than 30-60 minutes.
We’ll confirm your exact accommodation and location around 3-4 weeks before your Charities & NGOs internship begins. This is due to the demand for short-term accommodation and ever-changing availability.
