We’ll carefully design your internship program to equip you with the tools you need to succeed.
With start dates every month, and with a duration of anywhere between one and six months, you can build an internship program that works for you.
A high-class and booming economy, Tokyo is bursting with opportunity. As you work here, you’ll immerse yourself in this unique business culture. Professional and collaborative, the Japanese make time to treat everyone with respect. Build strong relationships with your colleagues and you’ll thrive. You’ll leave Tokyo with fantastic insight into this international business culture – and that’s sure to stand out to any future employer.
Living and working in Tokyo will be a totally unique adventure. You’ll always find something new to discover; whether that’s the countless cuisines of the city, or amazing museums, green spaces, and landmarks. You’ll end your internship wishing you could spend so much more time here!
Our skills workshop is a fantastic way to boost your development and employability.
You’ll work with qualified coaches and inspirational speakers to improve a wide range of skills; including leadership, communication, and building confidence in a professional setting.
You’ll leave the workshop equipped with the tools for success.
While you work, you’ll be able to pencil in a tailored coaching session. In this 1-to-1 appointment, you’ll reflect on your career alongside a qualified coach; including your strengths, weaknesses, and future goals.
Of course, you’ll have a busy diary full of community events, meetings, and trips; so you can fit this appointment in at the right time for you.
Some prefer a session in the early days of their internship. This is a great way to get the most out of your program; you’ll be able to set out your plan for the weeks ahead, all with professional advice.
Or you might prefer to take your session half-way through your internship. That’s a great choice for a meeting of two halves; consider how your internship has progressed so far, and adjust for your remaining time in Tokyo.
Alternatively, you could have your meeting toward the end of your internship. An appointment late in the day will allow you to look back over your successes and plan your next steps.
And at any time in your program, you’ll have access to personalized career advice and interview tips. We’ll also help you get your CV and LinkedIn profile into top condition.
Our online tools and resources are a great way to boost your employability.
Examples of the support we provide include:
– A personal development plan toolkit
– Online interview skills seminars
– Sessions on communication or building your brand
– And many more useful resources you can access at any time
Working in the charity sector is challenging, but immensely rewarding. Here are just a few of the tasks you might undertake while interning in Tokyo:

– Identifying and following up on relevant news and social media trends
With your Beyond Community beside you, Tokyo will soon feel like home.
Wherever you live, Japanese pop culture is pervasive across the world. As a result, much of Tokyo will feel familiar to you. But it’s so much more than the gleaming and futuristic surface. Beneath the shiny veneer is a city utterly in touch with itself and its heritage. You’ll find modern blockbusters alongside traditional bunraku puppet shows and kabuki theater; and alongside dazzling shopping centres you’ll discover market stalls offering unique slices of heritage. Food, culture, entertainment: it’s all here.
The Japanese are friendly and always willing to help. If ever you need advice or guidance, they’ll be first in line to assist. Alongside a friendly population will be your Beyond Community. You’re all navigating this busy and brand new city, so you’ll always have each other’s backs.
We’ll get you familiar with your program at your welcome orientation. We’ll take you through your internship, Tokyo, social events and trips, and more!
Take advantage of your international experience by meeting as many industry contacts as possible. We’ll send out regular invitations to industry events, so head along and introduce yourself!
Uncover the world-famous Mount Fuji. If you’re feeling brave, hike up the mountain for some breath-taking sights. On a clear day, you’ll get an unmatched view of Tokyo! Otherwise, stay on the ground and soak up the atmosphere of this towering icon.
To the Japanese, attention to detail is everything. Learn all about the intricate process of traditional Japanese tea-making, all while donning a traditional kimono!
Visit a delightful interactive museum that showcases modern Japanese digital art technology at its finest!
Throughout the program, your Tokyo Community Coordinators will be by your side, providing friendly support, and lots of fun and memorable experiences.
You’ll be eager to discover what it’s like to undertake a charity internship in Tokyo. So we’ve put together a glimpse at a typical program.
You can’t believe you’ve finally made it to Tokyo! Meet us at the airport and we’ll take you straight to your new accommodation.
Take day one to settle in. For some that will mean kicking back and relaxing in your new accommodation, or maybe a local café. For others that’ll mean maximizing your time in Tokyo by going out exploring. Either way, on day two you’ll join us for your orientation. We’ll take you through everything you need to know about your program, as well as Tokyo itself.
Afterwards, meet your Beyond Community. Start building close relationships over some delicious Japanese food – you’ll soon feel right at home!
You’re ready to dive straight into your internship, so head over to the office and meet your colleagues. Make a good first impression and then get to work! After a busy first day, you might want to unwind at a community dinner. Catch up with your new friends; why not some international food this time?
Working in the charity sector can be challenging, and you’ll often face new experiences. Many interns find that an early skills workshop is a good way of preparing themselves for the weeks ahead. Work with a qualified coach to hone your existing skills and learn some new ones too. You’ll leave confident in your abilities and ready to face your varied internship.
Before you know it, it’s time for your first day trip. Head to Mount Fuji to experience a slice of incredible natural beauty. Relax by ancient Shinto shrines or nearby tranquil lakes. This is one trip you won’t want to miss!
By now you’re growing more comfortable in your Charity internship. You’re now confident contributing to marketing strategies or offering up fundraising ideas. So now’s a good time to head out with your manager to a nearby café and discuss your progress.
Tokyo is an incredibly diverse city, and you’ll be constantly meeting new people. To help build up your network of contacts we’ll send you regular invites to top industry networking events. Head along and make a good impression on charity leaders, building up a valuable network of prestigious contacts.
Attend a community event to catch up with your fellow interns. After, grab snacks and drinks at a nearby convenience store and explore the local area together. Explore underground shopping malls at Tokyo station or enjoy the bright lights of Shibuya.
Next, it’s time for your second event. You’ll learn the secrets of traditional Japanese tea-making, while wearing the traditional kimono!
Your internship is nearing its end, and you’re thinking back on your time in Tokyo. You’ve had an amazing time; you’ve gained life-long friends, gained practical hands-on experience, explored Tokyo and developed a list of industry contacts. You can’t believe you’ve done all that in just six weeks!
Now is a good time to take your 1-to-1 career coaching session. Look back on what you’ve learned, as well as what could have been improved; leave this session empowered to take your next steps to success.
To conclude your cultural education, it’s time for your last trip. Visit Shinjuku and experience Tokyo’s famed nightlife scene. Dubbed the ‘Sleepless Town’, you’ll visit bars, restaurants, and karaoke rooms as you drink, eat, and sing to your heart’s content!
Before you start packing, there’s one last scheduled event to attend: your farewell dinner. Congratulate your friends on a job well done – it’s been an incredible journey, and you’ve all benefitted immeasurably. In your remaining time, dash round the city to see as much of it as possible. Visit one of Japan’s many Michelin-starred restaurants or if it’s the right season, enjoy a sumo match!
We collaborate with a diverse array of companies, spanning from boutique PR firms to multinational advisory firms. Please note that these examples are purely for reference. The specific company you’ll be associated with will be determined by a wide range of criteria.
+ USD 1,210 per month
+ JPY 140,000 for the first month, then JPY 120,000 per month
Our Tokyo housing partners are chosen according to our rigorous safety, quality and cleanliness standards. The housing we offer is mainly student accommodation or shared apartments. So your roommates will be fellow Beyond Interns, students and other young professionals; it’s a great way to build a local community.
You’ll have your own private bedroom with shared communal spaces (kitchen, living spaces etc). All rooms come with bedding, Wi-Fi, and often have a desk. Locations will vary but you’ll always be placed close to public transport. Depending on the location of your firm, we try to ensure your commute time is no more than 30-60 minutes.
We’ll confirm your exact accommodation and location around 3-4 weeks before your Charities & NGOs internship begins. This is due to the demand for short-term accommodation and ever-changing availability.
