“What I loved about Beyond Academy and why I choose them is because they are more flexible and more individually tailored to what each person is looking for, rather than just a generalised experience. My group and the entire Beyond community has been really welcoming. I am so lucky to be able to have this experience with people that are similar, as in we are all looking to grow personally, grow professionally and also just enjoy every moment. Everyone here has left behind the familiar and has come to the unfamiliar which can be scary, but when you have a community as good as this, it’s not scary at all.”

Hannah from the United States
PR & Journalism Intern, London Immersive Program

A Professional Environmental & Sustainability Internship

With start dates every month, and lasting anywhere between one and six months in length, you can choose an environmental internship that matches your career goals and aspirations.

New York has historically been a hotbed of pollution, but things are changing: the city now has ambitious targets to get to net zero by 2030. New York has the largest clean air diesel-hybrid and compressed natural gas bus fleet in the USA; it’s also a leader in the construction of energy-efficient green office buildings. Here you’ll gain new insight into an ever-changing industry; all while contributing a thing or two yourself.

Diversity is one of New York’s greatest strengths, and there’s always something new to see here. Meet a range of people and uncover new perspectives.

Immersive workshop

You’ll be facing unprecedented challenges in your internship. Our skills workshop will help you get your core competencies into shape.

Under the watchful eye of professional coaches and speakers, you’ll undertake a diverse array of skills exercises. A typical workshop will take you through effective leadership, team skills, and personal branding.

Get yourself fighting fit for the weeks ahead!

Career Coaching & Support

Draw on the insight of a professional coach as you consider your career in this 1-to-1 session. Take some time to look back on your successes and failures; then set out goals to meet throughout your internship and beyond.

Some interns take a meeting in the opening days of their program. This is a way of preparing yourself for the weeks ahead; chat about your expectations, then set out some goals to meet while you’re here. Alternatively, you could wait until a few weeks in for a more balanced session. Reflect on the progress you’ve made, then consider the improvements you can make in your remaining time here.

Lastly, you might want to meet with your coach in the final days of your program. This is a good way of capping off your time in the city. Look back critically at what you’ve achieved and what you could have done better; then turn your eye to the future.

And at any time in your internship, you can access our personalized career advice and interview tips. Whether you’d like help as you perfect your CV or resume; or guidance as you get your LinkedIn profile up to scratch.

Weeks 1 & 2

Taking one look at the world-famous skyscrapers of New York, you know you’ve finally made it to the city. Your internship is about to begin; kick things off by joining us in arrivals. We’ll take you straight from the airport to your new home. On the rest of your first day, explore the city or get settled in your room.

You’ll join us on day two for your comprehensive orientation. This is an opportunity to get familiar with everything that awaits you on your program; in the evening, head out to meet your new friends. Chat with your brand-new Beyond Community, all over an authentic New York dish or two.

Turn up early on your first day of work and get ready to learn. Meet your new team – make a good impression, because you’ll be spending a lot of time here over the coming weeks. As you dive into your workload, make sure you’re drawing on the support of your colleagues; they’re here to help you succeed. Ask as many questions as you need to!

But you’ll quickly find yourself challenged by new and unforeseen responsibilities; especially if you haven’t worked in the sector before. Weeks 3 & 4

By now, you’re feeling increasingly confident in your role. You’ve been keeping careful track of the latest innovations in the world of sustainability, reporting back to your colleagues to update them on new ideas; and you’ve gained fantastic organizational skills, designing and implementing events at nearby educational facilities to boost local awareness. So it’s a good time to meet with your manager and let them know how things are going.

It’s been a busy few weeks, and you’re looking to relax. Unwind and enjoy yourself with a community dinner; check in with your friends over one of New York’s many international cuisines. Afterwards, luxuriate in Central Park!

By now, you’ll have received an invite to a professional networking event; so head along and start to build up your burgeoning contact list. Meet with the leading lights of the environmental sector as you gain new insights into your industry. Impress the right person and good things may come of it.

It’s already time for your second tour. Take a journey to the historic Lower East Side, a neighbourhood of blended international cultures. Take in some art, music and history as you experience a lesser-known side of the city.

Your last scheduled event is your goodbye dinner. It’s always an emotional night; swap your favorite stories of your time in the city, arrange your first group meet-up, and then say goodbye.

In your remaining few days, you’ll want to get as much as you can out of New York. Blast across the bay in the Beast, a luxury jet boat; or visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not to see some unbelievable artifacts and exhibits from around the world.
