Here’s a snapshot of what it’s like to intern in Tokyo based on a typical 6-week Finance & Accounting internship program.
It’s finally here; after so much anticipation, you’ve made it to Japan. Time to wait for our team to pick you up from the airport and take you to your new home for the next 6 weeks.
As it’s your first day, catch your breath and sleep off the jetlag. After that, it’s on to your Tokyo orientation. Here you’ll meet your fellow interns; get to know what awaits you on your internship and start making new friends.
On your first day at your new accounting firm meet your new manager and in-house accounts team. Work hard and maintain a polite and friendly demeanor. The Japanese are respectful and courteous in all their business dealings, so adopt this same mentality and you’ll go far. After your first day, unwind and enjoy some Japanese cuisine at a community dinner.
During your Finance & Accounting internship you’ll learn something new every day. To aid you as you adapt to this new culture, why not take your skills workshop? Use what you learn during your workshop to prepare and equip yourself with confidence for the weeks ahead.
Next up, put on your hiking boots because it’s time for your first trip. Visit Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji and explore everything it has to offer.
By now, you are getting comfortable in your role. You’ve successfully shadowed an accountant and understand what the role entails. You’re now confident enough to conduct research on your own and have a handle on institutional investing and market-based finance. Your daily tasks include maintaining financial records and appropriately handling confidential information.
Now is the perfect time to schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss your progress and receive feedback. While you are working hard on your Accounting internship, we’ll be scanning the area for some professional networking events. Keep an eye out for invites and take the opportunity to meet some new international contacts.
Next, it’s time for your second event. You’ll learn the secrets of traditional Japanese tea-making, while wearing the traditional kimono!
In the final few weeks of your internship, your attention is now on your future financial career.
If you haven’t already, schedule your 1-to-1 career coaching session to discuss your career ambitions and work out how best to realize your dreams. Your coach will offer practical advice and prepare you for success.
You’ve achieved a lot in such a short time. You’ve gained practical, hands-on experience and accounting knowledge. Not to mention, your friendship circle and list of international contacts has grown.
But before you leave, enjoy one last tour of the Shinjuku district. Stroll through neon-lit alleys and clanking pachinko arcades. Check out the trendiest bars and top your night off with some karaoke or dancing.
Your final scheduled event is a fantastic send-off. Our farewell dinner lets you say a proper goodbye to the wonderful friends you’ve made. Before you head home to pack, you have some time to fit in some last-minute sightseeing. Perhaps you’ll visit Asakusa Shrine; make sure to grab some rice crackers or strawberry daifuku as you stroll through its surrounding market stalls. Whatever you do, make the most of this unforgettable city while you can.
We collaborate with a diverse array of companies, spanning from boutique PR firms to multinational advisory firms. Please note that these examples are purely for reference. The specific company you’ll be associated with will be determined by a wide range of criteria.
