“What I loved about Beyond Academy and why I choose them is because they are more flexible and more individually tailored to what each person is looking for, rather than just a generalised experience. My group and the entire Beyond community has been really welcoming. I am so lucky to be able to have this experience with people that are similar, as in we are all looking to grow personally, grow professionally and also just enjoy every moment. Everyone here has left behind the familiar and has come to the unfamiliar which can be scary, but when you have a community as good as this, it’s not scary at all.”

Your Amsterdam Community

From the moment you land in Amsterdam, you’ll sense that the Dutch do things a little differently. The first thing you’ll notice is how little noise there is compared to a typical city. The Dutch love cycling, and most journeys around the city are conducted via bike or water taxi. That means less pollution and more fresh air and exercise; so grab a bike and explore the city before stopping off for a coffee in one of Amsterdam’s trendy cafés. Or relax among beautiful tulips as you picnic alongside a canal. Plus, there’s all the museums, art galleries, and restaurants you’ll expect to find in a modern city.

Alongside you as you explore will be your Beyond Community. It’s the best network of friends you could possibly have.

Welcome Orientation

When you land, it’s time for your comprehensive orientation. We’ll introduce you to Amsterdam and the work that awaits you. You’ll also get plenty of invites to our popular community dinners. They’re a great way to keep in touch with your community, so make sure to head along!

Networking Opportunities

Take advantage of this international experience as you meet as many hospitality and events professionals as possible; if it goes well, your next job or interview offer may be just around the corner. We’ll send you out an invite to an exclusive industry event, so head along and meet some of the top leaders in your sector!

Canal Cruise

Cruise along the canals of Amsterdam and take in the city from a new perspective. Float gently along as you spot iconic sights and striking architecture; and make sure you snack on a delicious range of food and drink as you go! There’s truly no better way to experience the Venice of the North than through its diverse and beautiful waterways.

Market Tour

From the historic Old Town to the fluorescent lights of Chinatown, dive into the heart of Amsterdam with this market tour. Learn some local history and culture as you move from stall to stall, getting to know the city from the ground up. Leave some room for some tasty Dutch food, including sweet stroopwafel and chunky Dutch fries.

Zaanse Schans

Take a journey out of Amsterdam as you visit the traditional site of Zaanse Schans. Full of centuries-old houses, windmills, and bakeries, you’ll experience a full range of Dutch history as you take in the sights. Try some freshly baked goods; then grab a handcrafted souvenir or two from an artisanal stall for friends and family back home.

Your Amsterdam program
at a glance

To give you a glimpse at what it’s like to intern in Amsterdam, we’ve put together a snapshot of a typical 6-week hospitality internship.

Intern in Amsterdam after just arriving for our internship

Weeks 1 & 2

You can’t quite believe that you’ve finally made it to Amsterdam. An entire city of history, culture, and unique experiences awaits you, and you can’t wait to start exploring. So meet us on arrival and we’ll whisk you to your new home.

The rest of your first day is your own. You might want to lounge around in your room and unwind after a long flight; or jump on a bike and head into the city center. Whatever you choose, join us on day two for your orientation. We’ll run you through everything you need to know about living in Amsterdam, including your work and the trips that await. Afterwards, head out to meet your new community. You’ll soon be the closest of friends, and this is where it all starts.

On your first day, turn up nice and early and meet your new colleagues. Work hard and ask lots of questions. They’ll be your professional support network throughout your time here; but they’ll also treat you like one of the team, so dive in!

As you begin tackling your varied tasks and responsibilities, you’ll likely find yourself challenged. So it’s a good idea to take an early skills workshop. Working with professional coaches and speakers,
you’ll run through a selection of exercises designed to improve your core competencies. It’s a great way to get yourself into the right mindset for the rest of your internship.

Soon, it’s already time for your first trip: a luxurious canal cruise through the heart of Amsterdam. Float along and take it all in; go icon-spotting as you indulge in some tasty food!

Office building of interns in Amsterdam

Weeks 3 & 4

As the weeks go on, you’ve been growing increasingly confident in your skills. You’re adept at taking client feedback on board as you help build events to their specifications; and you’ve been working hard on your firm’s social media campaigns, boosting user engagement and increasing leads. So head out with your manager and review your progress so far.

You might want to take some time out to catch up with your friends at a community dinner. Take a break from your busy work schedule as you swap anecdotes and try some delicious food; if your welcome dinner was traditionally Dutch, why not branch out and go international? Afterwards, cycle home along a moonlit canal.

English is widely spoken in Amsterdam, so you’ll be making new professional connections with ease. To help you build your own network, we’ll send you an invite to a top industry event. Head along and meet your sector’s leaders; hit it off and good things may come of it.

For your second trip, get ready to be immersed in the streets of Amsterdam. Take a market tour as you get to grips with the beating heart of the city; try some sumptuous Dutch food as you learn a little local history and culture. Before you leave, make sure to stop off in the glorious Old Town.

Weeks 5 & 6

Before you know it, your program has started drawing to a close, so you’ve scheduled your 1-to-1 career session. Use this opportunity to look back at what you’ve achieved: fantastic work experience, life-long friends and professional contacts, and a complete cultural immersion. You’ve used your time here well! Cap off your session by facing the future: what’s your plan after leaving Amsterdam?

Your final trip will take you to Zaanse Schans, so head out of the city to experience this slice of a more traditional time. Take in the preserved houses, museums, and bakeries – as well as a selection of iconic Dutch windmills. Before you leave, try some fresh chocolate, then grab some souvenirs to take home.

Your last scheduled event is your farewell dinner. Meet up with your friends for one last time as you share your favorite memories of your time in Amsterdam. Pledge to get together sometime soon, then say goodbye. Before you’re due to depart the city, you’ll want to check off everything you possibly can. Take in the best Golden Age Dutch artwork in the Rijksmuseum; or soak up the atmosphere in the cultural hotspot of NSDM Wharf!
