You’ll be eager to find out just what it’s like to intern in Amsterdam; so we’ve put together this snapshot, based on a typical 6-week HR internship.
After months of planning, preparation and excitement, you’ve made it. Welcome to Amsterdam. You can’t wait to dive into this varied and historic city; but first, meet us at the airport and allow us to take you to your home for the coming weeks.
Spend your first day in a way that works for you. Some like to kick back and relax; others will jump on a bike or water taxi and start exploring the city. On day two, you’ll join us for your orientation. Here, we’ll familiarize you with everything awaiting you on your program, including the work you’ll be doing and Amsterdam itself. That evening, you’ll attend your first community dinner. It’s a fantastic welcome, so head along and meet your new community. Get to know each other over the finest Dutch food!
The Dutch are keen timekeepers, so turn up promptly to make a good impression on your first day of work. Throw yourself into your tasks and start learning everything you can; if you get stuck or need help, your colleagues will always be a great source of support and assistance.
As you begin to tackle your workload, you’ll soon find yourself challenged. So you might want to take an early skills workshop. You’ll work with coaches and speakers to train your core skills and competencies, ready for the weeks ahead. It’s a great way of adjusting to the busy life of an HR intern.
Soon enough, it’s already time for your first trip. Experience Amsterdam from a unique perspective as you cruise through the heart of the city. Take in fantastic landmarks and sights, all while snacking on some delicious food!
As you enter the third week of your internship, you’re growing increasingly confident in your abilities. You’ve got to grips with your diverse workload; whether that’s assisting in the creation of training material, or conducting phone and face-to-face interviews with potential new hires. Take some time out with your manager and discuss what you’ve learned so far.
At this point, it’s a good time to unwind after a busy few weeks at a community dinner. Meet up with your friends at a restaurant, or grab some takeaways and bask in the sun in a nearby park. Afterwards, take an evening walk home alongside a beautiful canal.
You’ll have met plenty of professionals in your HR role, and you may have made a few connections of your own. To assist you as you develop your network, we’ll send you an invite to an exclusive industry event. Get to know some top leaders in your sector; good things may just be around the corner.
Next up is your second trip. Explore the heart of Amsterdam as you hop from market to market, experiencing everything the city has to offer. Feast on a range of food both Dutch and international, learning a bit of local history and culture as you go.
You feel like you’ve barely started, but as you enter week five your internship is drawing to a close. So if you haven’t already, it’s a good time to schedule your 1-to-1 career session. With professional insight, look back at what you’ve gained: world-class work experience, life-long friends and contacts, and a total cultural immersion to boot. Not bad for six weeks. End your session by thinking about your next steps after leaving Amsterdam.
Your final trip will take you to Zaanse Schans, so make the journey out of the city to experience this slice of traditional Dutch life. Take in the 18th-century houses, museums, and bakeries – as well as the iconic sight of multiple Dutch windmills. Before leaving, make sure you try some freshly baked goods, then grab some souvenirs for friends and family.
Your final scheduled event is your farewell dinner. Put on your best clothes and head along to meet up with your friends for one last time. Swap your favorite anecdotes and memories of the last six weeks, then say goodbye. And before you’re due to fly out, make sure you’ve made the most of the city. Whether that’s experiencing the Anne Frank Museum, or enjoy a cocktail as you take in the view from A’dam Toren’s Skybar!

You’ll be living with fellow Beyond Interns, students and other young professionals. It’s a great way to build your own community, especially if you’re traveling from abroad.
You’ll have your own private bedroom with shared communal spaces (kitchen, bathroom, living spaces etc). All rooms come with bedding, Wi-Fi, and often have a desk.
