Beyonders Share Their Experience on Our Program

“What I loved about Beyond Academy and why I choose them is because they are more flexible and more individually tailored to what each person is looking for, rather than just a generalised experience. My group and the entire Beyond community has been really welcoming. I am so lucky to be able to have this experience with people that are similar, as in we are all looking to grow personally, grow professionally and also just enjoy every moment. Everyone here has left behind the familiar and has come to the unfamiliar which can be scary, but when you have a community as good as this, it’s not scary at all.”

Hannah from the United States
PR & Journalism Intern, London Immersive Program

“I am involved in Project Management, which is close to what I want to do in the future. One of my favorite parts of my internship is that I’m taken seriously. I work in a team who creates content relating to K-pop. My favourite part of interning is getting to know my coworkers, being around a group of people that are just so kind and inviting, working alongside them every day has been the best experience. I had been hearing about Beyond Academy for quite some time and I read some really great reviews. I wanted to get the work and life balance, which Beyond offered. My favourite thing about Beyond are the connections I have made here and also the events that have been planned, it gets all of us out to embrace Korean culture.”

NYC intern on her second day

Weeks 1 & 2

As you catch sight of the towering skyscrapers of New York, you realize that months of planning and excitement have finally paid off; welcome to the Big Apple. Step off the plane and meet us in arrivals; we’re here to whisk you from the airport and take you straight to your home for the next few weeks. Finish off your first day as you wish; whether it’s sleeping off the jet lag or getting out there and exploring, the choice is yours.

On day two, you’ll join us for your orientation. We’ll familiarize you with everything you’ll face on your program. In the evening, meet your new friends at the first of many community dinners. Settle into life in the city as you get to know each other – all over a slice of New York-style pizza.

Turn up nice and early on your first day of work and introduce yourself to your colleagues. Get the lowdown on your work, then dive straight in. Remember, you’re here to learn, and your co-workers want to see you succeed; use their knowledge and insight to your advantage, and get as much out of them as you can!

As you begin to get to grips with your workload, you’ll soon find yourself challenged. So take an early workshop to prepare yourself for the weeks ahead. Undertake exercises in key areas to improve yourself; you’ll emerge from this session feeling completely renewed.

Next, it’s already time for the first of your half-day trips. Experience the world-famous borough of Brooklyn as you sample everything this huge part of New York has to offer. From cafes and restaurants to cultural centers, there’s something for everyone here; experience it all!

View over NYC

Weeks 3 & 4

It’s your third week in New York, and you’re feeling increasingly confident in your role. Whether it’s chasing down leads for the next big story or conducting interviews for slice-of-life features, you’re gaining invaluable experience. Take some time out with your manager to discuss how you’re getting on.

After a busy few weeks, you might want to enjoy yourself with a community dinner. Meet up with your friends as you try one of New York’s many authentic international restaurants; chat the night away, then grab a yellow taxi or the subway home.

By now, you’ll probably have made a fair few contacts of your own. Head along to an industry networking session and meet some top media executives; hit it off with the right person and you just might be speaking to your next boss.

Soon enough, it’s time to get ready for your second tour. You’ll be taking a visit down to the Lower East Side, a unique corner of Manhattan. A traditionally immigrant and working-class neighbourhood, there’s plenty of history and blended culture for you to sink your teeth into.

Weeks 5 & 6

You can’t quite believe that your time in New York is nearing its end. You feel as if you’ve barely got started here. If you haven’t already, pencil in your 1-to-1 career session to review your almost-completed program. Discuss the future paths now open to you; what will come next in your career?

For your final trip, journey into the musical heart of New York for a jazz experience like no other. Go from jazz bar to jazz bar, luxuriating in the music on offer – and enjoying a cocktail or two as you go!

All good things must come to an end, so cap off your time in New York with one final dinner. Meet up with your friends for the last time; congratulate each other on a job well done, then say goodbye.

And in your final few days, you’ll want to make one last dash around the city to check off as much as you can. Visit the Elevated Acre to discover a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city; or visit the Mmuseumm, a freight elevator housing a tiny museum that specializes in the “overlooked, dismissed, or ignored”!
