Beyonders share their experiences

“I love art, I love animation, I love videography and I love photography. This program was very helpful for me to pursue my goals and my dreams. I have met so many people who have reached out, made connections and pushed me to improve on my design work. Japan has everything that I love; the food, the culture, the people! I’ve always seen myself moving here and I am very grateful to Beyond Academy for this opportunity.”

Khadeem from the US
Game Design Intern, Tokyo Immersive Program

“If I can sum up my experience with Beyond Academy in 3 words, it would definitely be fun, growth, and life-changing. I would wake up every morning being so excited about what I would be doing at my internship and where I would be having dinner with all the other interns. I definitely grew as a person, gaining confidence and knowing what I want to do with my life, which goes in turn with life-changing as it really showed me what I want to do in the next steps of my career.”

Issy from the UK
Environmental & Sustainability Intern, Seoul Immersive Program

“The best part about my internship is my colleagues! I go for lunch everyday with my boss – they would show me Korean food and I was able to show them some Italian food. Three words that I would use to sum up my experience here would be: food – because I’ve tried almost everything; balance – the balance between work and personal life; and personal growth. I am usually very shy and introverted, but I’ve learnt so much about myself here and found out that I can do things on my own that usually I wouldn’t have by myself!”

Lorenza from Italy
Event Management Intern, Seoul Immersive Program

“My degree is in nursing and I’m currently getting my Masters of Business Administration. Making this decision to change my career path was really nerve-racking at first, but Beyond Academy really helped me to gain business experience through this internship role. My favorite thing about Beyond Academy is having that community, even in a place really far away from home. I am really excited that I got to do this program, because without it I wouldn’t have gotten this international experience, and confidence to move on in my career.”

Annemarie from the US
Business Intern, Dublin Immersive Program

“Personally, it has been fun to take a break from school and travel abroad to a place I’ve never been to before, immerse myself in a new culture and meet new people. Professionally, it’s been nice interning at a company that does B2B businesses! Seeing how different a company like this works has been interesting; how they liase with their clients, how they find clients to begin with. It’s all very new to me, and allows me to see what different paths there may be for my career.”

Anjali from Singapore
Journalism, Publishing & Media Intern, Dublin Immersive Program

“”I wanted to do an internship abroad because it would help me to enhance my CV, and particularly also because organistions offering a journalism internship in the Politics or International Relations sector are really hard to come by. The staff at Beyond Academy are really patient and kind, which is something I value. The fact that they take the effort to check that everything is fine before as well as after you arrive for your internship, is something I found really useful. You will not be alone in this adventure!”

Luis from Bolivia
Journalism, Publishing & Media Intern, Dublin Immersive Program

“”Beyond Academy has made it very easy for us to live abroad! I found the career coach Chloë to be extremely helpful – after my session with her I have a much better understanding of what I want for my career in the future. Beyond Academy held my hand throughout the entire process. There was never a moment I felt too overwhelmed or too nervous as they’ve taken care of all the stress involved, allowing me to fully focus on the experience itself. ”

Kristen from the US
Environmental & Sustainability Intern, Dublin Immersive Program

“I am interning at an advertising company – the workplace is great and the people are really nice! They have been able to offer me on-the-job learning in different divisions of their company to give me as much experience as possible. This internship has really allowed me to explore! I’ve never had much experience in the workplace, especially within the design sector. I now understand how things work inside an agency, and have learnt a lot about what I want in the future! ”

Lily from the UK
Art, Design & Photography Intern, Sydney Immersive Program

“At my internship company, I’ve been working with content management systems to help with website updates, as well as working on the website architecture and search engine optimisation which is a skill that is very important to digital media platforms in this day and age. I’ve also had the very great pleasure of writing and publishing a number of articles with them! The Beyond representatives in London have been incredibly helpful and I very much enjoyed spending two months living and working in one of the most fascinating global cities on the planet.”

Daniel from the UK
Journalism, Publishing & Media Intern, London Immersive Program

“I’m interning in a creative office for a role in the Art industry, and it was cool that I was able to find an internship that is not only what I’m wanting to do, but also in an environment that is very creative and art-forward. I’ve seen a whole different side of art that I haven’t seen through school; a more business side! This has shown me that there’s more to art than I know.”

Martin from the US
Art, Design & Photography Intern, London Immersive Program

“I wasn’t always sure what I wanted to go into and I thought that an internship would help me become more sure of myself and my field of study. It’s been really cool meeting such a diverse group of people. We’re all very different, but we get along really well and there was no other way for us to ever have met if it wasn’t for Beyond Academy. Living and working in a different country for the summer is something that will stay with you forever and I’ll always remember it!”

Natalia from the US
Charities & NGOs Intern, Barcelona Immersive Program

My co-workers are incredible, so its been a really good experience, something I think that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I have paved a better path for myself being here, and I have gotten to dive a little more deeper into my field in something I am very passionate about.”

Olivia from the United States

“My experience so far has been really great, my internship was really fun and I could gain a lot of new insights into the field that I am interested in. There were so many cool events that I could attend thanks to Beyond Academy, and I met so many great people and I am so thankful for all the experiences I had. There is so much that is included in the program besides just them organising the internship, you get so many social events and a community that actually cares about you. There’s a full on social calendar of events that you can go to, so you never feel lonely or don’t know what to do. My favourite thing about beyond is all the people that I met, I am so grateful for the connections that I made. I will have these connections for the rest of my life and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet these people and have so many great memories that I can look back on. ”

Hannah from Switzerland

“My experience so far here has been amazing, it’s just a shock how much I have been enjoying it. The interns are amazing here so we have been hanging out and getting to know each other and exploring Seoul. It’s really just been a full experience that I have been embracing every single day. I work in a team who creates content relating to K-pop. My favourite part of interning is getting to know my coworkers, being around a group of people that are just so kind and inviting, working alongside them every day has been the best experience. I had been hearing about Beyond Academy for quite some time and I read some really great reviews. I wanted to get the work and life balance, which Beyond offered. at a glance

Here’s a snapshot of life in Tokyo, based on a typical 6-week Journalism internship program.

tokyo-shibuya

Weeks 1 & 2

As you touch down in Tokyo, you can barely contain your excitement. You’ve finally made it to Japan, and you’re ready to begin your internship adventure. But first things first: let us meet you at the airport and whisk you straight to your new accommodation.

Spend your first day unwinding. Some interns like to kick back and relax in their hotel room – or sleep off the jet lag; others like to head straight out there and get exploring their surroundings. The choice is yours. On day two, join us for a comprehensive orientation around Tokyo, preparing you for the weeks ahead. After, meet your brand new Beyond Community; you might chat over sushi, or sample an international cuisine.

You’re eager to throw yourself into your work, so introduce yourself to your manager and colleagues. Familiarize yourself with your new office; you’ll be spending a lot of time here, so get comfortable! After your busy first day, relax at a community dinner; then head home, perhaps catching a high-tech Tokyo Metro.

Your internship is a constant opportunity to grow, and you’ll often find yourself challenged. So why not take a skills workshop to equip yourself with the right tools for the job? Under the guidance of qualified coaches, improve your existing skills and learn some new ones. Apply your knowledge to your internship and impress your colleagues!

Before you know it, it’s already time for your first day trip: Mount Fuji. Journey up to this incredible landmark for some eye-catching views; before you go, make time for a reflective moment by a Shinto shrine.

tokyo-sushi

Weeks 3 & 4

As the weeks progress, you’ve settled in well to your internship. Your copywriting skills are improving, and you’ve comfortable pitching regular ideas to the lead development team in meetings. So head out with your manager to a café or sushi bar and discuss your progress.

While you’re in Tokyo, you’ll be constantly meeting a diverse array of new and interesting people. You’ll have already begun to build a solid list of contacts; to help, we’ll send out regular invites to industry events. Put on your best clothes and introduce yourself at an upmarket bar or restaurant. Use networking events to gather as many contact details as you can, because you never know where it might lead.

Next, it’s time for your second event. You’ll learn the secrets of traditional Japanese tea-making, while wearing the traditional kimono!

tokyo-workshop

Weeks 5 & 6

Your internship is nearing its end. You’ve taken to calling Tokyo home, so you’ll be sad to go. But the positive is that you’ll leave with some top industry experience, new contacts, and new friends. What more can you ask for?

Now’s a good time to take advantage of your 1-to-1 coaching session. Consider your progress and achievements in this tailored session, then start planning your next career steps.

You’ve become a master of Japanese business culture, and you’re intimately familiar with Japanese culture more generally. Finish off your immersion with a trip to Shinjuku. Take in this amazing slice of Japanese cultural life and visit bars, restaurants, and iconic karaoke rooms!

Before you go, it’s time for one last event: your goodbye dinner. Congratulate your friends and think back on what you’ve learned and experienced; it’s been a truly amazing time. And make sure you’ve ticked off everything on your list before you leave Tokyo! Ride the bullet train, visit the Tokyo National Museum, or head up Tokyo Skytree for an amazing view.

As you fly out, get one last glimpse at that amazing Tokyo skyline.
