Here’s a snapshot of life in Tokyo, based on a typical 6-week Journalism internship program.
As you touch down in Tokyo, you can barely contain your excitement. You’ve finally made it to Japan, and you’re ready to begin your internship adventure. But first things first: let us meet you at the airport and whisk you straight to your new accommodation.
Spend your first day unwinding. Some interns like to kick back and relax in their hotel room – or sleep off the jet lag; others like to head straight out there and get exploring their surroundings. The choice is yours. On day two, join us for a comprehensive orientation around Tokyo, preparing you for the weeks ahead. After, meet your brand new Beyond Community; you might chat over sushi, or sample an international cuisine.
You’re eager to throw yourself into your work, so introduce yourself to your manager and colleagues. Familiarize yourself with your new office; you’ll be spending a lot of time here, so get comfortable! After your busy first day, relax at a community dinner; then head home, perhaps catching a high-tech Tokyo Metro.
Your internship is a constant opportunity to grow, and you’ll often find yourself challenged. So why not take a skills workshop to equip yourself with the right tools for the job? Under the guidance of qualified coaches, improve your existing skills and learn some new ones. Apply your knowledge to your internship and impress your colleagues!
Before you know it, it’s already time for your first day trip: Mount Fuji. Journey up to this incredible landmark for some eye-catching views; before you go, make time for a reflective moment by a Shinto shrine.
As the weeks progress, you’ve settled in well to your internship. Your copywriting skills are improving, and you’ve comfortable pitching regular ideas to the lead development team in meetings. So head out with your manager to a café or sushi bar and discuss your progress.
While you’re in Tokyo, you’ll be constantly meeting a diverse array of new and interesting people. You’ll have already begun to build a solid list of contacts; to help, we’ll send out regular invites to industry events. Put on your best clothes and introduce yourself at an upmarket bar or restaurant. Use networking events to gather as many contact details as you can, because you never know where it might lead.
Next, it’s time for your second event. You’ll learn the secrets of traditional Japanese tea-making, while wearing the traditional kimono!
Your internship is nearing its end. You’ve taken to calling Tokyo home, so you’ll be sad to go. But the positive is that you’ll leave with some top industry experience, new contacts, and new friends. What more can you ask for?
Now’s a good time to take advantage of your 1-to-1 coaching session. Consider your progress and achievements in this tailored session, then start planning your next career steps.
You’ve become a master of Japanese business culture, and you’re intimately familiar with Japanese culture more generally. Finish off your immersion with a trip to Shinjuku. Take in this amazing slice of Japanese cultural life and visit bars, restaurants, and iconic karaoke rooms!
Before you go, it’s time for one last event: your goodbye dinner. Congratulate your friends and think back on what you’ve learned and experienced; it’s been a truly amazing time. And make sure you’ve ticked off everything on your list before you leave Tokyo! Ride the bullet train, visit the Tokyo National Museum, or head up Tokyo Skytree for an amazing view.
As you fly out, get one last glimpse at that amazing Tokyo skyline.
We collaborate with a diverse array of companies, spanning from boutique PR firms to multinational advisory firms. Please note that these examples are purely for reference. The specific company you’ll be associated with will be determined by a wide range of criteria.
+ USD 1,210 per month
+ JPY 140,000 for the first month, then JPY 120,000 per month
Our Tokyo housing partners are chosen to meet to our stringent safety, quality and cleanliness standards. The housing we offer is mainly student accommodation or shared apartments. So your roommates will be fellow Beyond Interns, students and other young professionals; it’s a great way to build a local community.
You’ll have your own private bedroom with shared communal spaces (kitchen, bathroom, living spaces etc). All rooms come with bedding, Wi-Fi, and often have a desk. Locations will vary but you’ll always be placed close to public transport. Depending on the location of your firm, we try to ensure your commute time is no more than 30-60 minutes.
We’ll confirm your exact accommodation and location around 3-4 weeks before your Journalism, Publishing, & Media internship begins. This is due to the demand for short-term accommodation and ever-changing availability.
