There aren’t many cites as iconic as San Francisco. The bridge, the hills, the cable cars, and the prison. They all add up to a very special city that charms and delights even the most demanding visitors. It’s the 4th richest city in the world, after Moscow, New York and London. That’s thanks to the sheer number of successful companies based here. The climate remains a major pull for many who come here, along with the spectacular beaches and walking opportunities.

Life in San Francisco as a Student and Young Professional

Living

It’s a little city with a big heart. Measuring only 46 square miles, it’s small compared with New York’s 302. Don’t let that fool you though, San Fran can hold its own in both business and fun.

While there is no Subway yet, a new line is due to open in 2021. But why would you want to go underground when there is so much to see up top? There is no shortage of other ways to get about, local buses, F-line, Vintage Trolley Cars, Historic Cable Cars can all get you where you need to go.

Unsurprisingly getting out and about is a big part of how the locals spend their free time. Walking trails and hiking are fun and free, not to mention healthy (just don’t forget the sunscreen). Health, in general, is a priority. Swimming, sauna, pilates and yoga are all common. It speaks about the quest for inner peace as much as physical health.

Eating

Eating out, and ordering in, are popular ways to eat in San Francisco. On top of the usual Americana, you’ll find amazing examples of authentic Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and seafood dishes throughout the city.

Don’t leave without trying local favourites Cioppino (seafood stew) and clam chowder in San Fran’s famous sourdough bread bowl.

Working

Of the 50 companies in a 2018 study on best business cultures, San Francisco was home to 11 of them. Competition is fierce here and companies need to work hard to attract and keep talent. This has also led to employee-focused work environments where comfort comes first. That said many places will still want you in a suit and tie.

American business culture also means being the best you can be and always giving 100%. Be prepared to stay back in the office for deadline crunch time.

Our local favourites

Camera Obscura

Have you visited the bridge yet? It’s so hard to see, it’s an easy one to miss. Another of San Francisco’s claims to fame is the Camera Obscura on the cliff above Ocean Beach. It’s one of only 20 in the world so worth a look. You’ll get views of Seal Rock and the Cliffs unlike any other.

Tank Hill

Getting up into one of the 40+ hills in and around San Francisco is definitely worth it. Ditch Twin Peaks in favor of Tank Hill. It’s got stunning panoramic views and is less well known, so it won’t have as many visitors.
